Here Comes Russia?

Azerbaijan and Armenian forces resumed fighting today in Nagorno-Karabakh as Armenia accused Azerbaijan forces of shelling civilian settlement. Azerbaijan denied this claim. Armenian officials have asked global powers to step in and assist in ceasefire negotiations. Armenia President Sarkissian said, “In the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Russia is a trusted and pro-active mediator between the conflicting sides. Russia plays a crucial role here.”

However, Azeri officials think it is hazardous for Armenia to desire Russian military support and that third parties should not be involved. Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned he wishes the United States would help Russia broker a solution.

Lastly, it is worth noting Turkey has voiced support for Azerbaijan, while Russia has a defense pact with Armenia. Turkey’s position has caused friction within NATO, and US Secretary of State Pompeo has accused Turkey of arming Azerbaijan.
