Germany has seen a recent surge in activity of far-right political groups. These groups often claim to be religious organizations but espouse racist and antisemitic views reminiscent of the views of the Nazi party. Publicly promoting these ideologies is illegal in Germany. In an attempt to ban these groups, the German authorities have organized raids on the homes of members. The two latest raids were against the groups Artgemeinschaft and the Hammerskins.

The authorities are especially concerned about the popularity these groups are attracting in light of the plot 10 months ago by Reichsbürger to overthrow the government. This was another far-right extremist group whose members included prominent people in society such as a judge, police officers, and military personnel.

This increase in support for the far right has in turn put pressure on the government to address the large numbers of asylum seekers entering the country. The far-right Alternative for Germany party has gained traction in eastern Germany which has given a greater voice to those opposing immigration. As a result, the government has implemented mobile checks along the border routes that many criminal organizations smuggle immigrants through. The increased xenophobic mindset regarding immigration marks a distinct departure from Germany’s past willingness to accommodate asylum seekers.
