On Tuesday November 2nd, Uganda’s army announced the capture of “Njovu” , a leader of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). He is accused of the killing of two tourists and their guide in Queen Elizabeth Park on October 17th and other attacks in Western Uganda. The army’s raid killed 6 members of Njovu squad making him the only survivor, which he will be put on trial for his crimes. Authorities said  his capture should reassure residents and tourists that the government is taking steps to ensure the safety of everyone and is attempting to defeat the ADF.

The ADF is an ISIS-linked militia that has posed a threat to the government since the early 1990’s. The group operates from the DRC engaging in illegal activities to finance their operations. The group has represented a security threat for the government as it executes jihadist attacks on Ugandan soil. Authorities claim to have foiled several attack plots including the bombing of churches and schools. Security and military operations need to take a primary role in Uganda’s regional security strategy and cooperation with the DRC should be fomented. A collective effort could facilitate the security of the region and the defeat of the ADF.
