This week, Honduran and Chinese diplomats met to keep discussing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Honduras and China. Yu Bo, the Chinese ambassador to Honduras, was invited to meet with the Honduran Foreign Minister, Enrique Reina. They also discussed Honduras’ participation in the Shanghai Import Fair. Honduran companies participated in the Shanghai Import Fair to attract commercial investment in Honduras. The Honduran Institute of Tourism (HIT) states that Honduras secured over $900 million worth of investment in Honduras.

According to Dr. Evan Ellis, this fits China’s strategy in Latin America and Africa. Ellis explains how China’s public engagement in both regions works toward fulfilling the goals stated in their globally-oriented policy documents. These include the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Global Development Initiative (GDI), the Global Security Initiative (GSI), and the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI). Ellis also states that it is important that these nations engage in public remarks where they emphasize they recognize Beijing over Taipei. This fits Beijing’s policy in the country and the region since experts warn of the rush to sign these FTAs with Beijing and to beware of the conditions that involve strategic and geopolitical interests.
