The announcement of Trump’s 20-point peace plan is said to end Israel’s war in Gaza immediately. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the peace plan but was still awaiting a response from Hamas at the time. Hamas, eventually responding late Friday, announced it was ready to release the remaining hostages as long as certain peace conditions were met and more clarifications of the plan were discussed, including a timeline for the withdrawal of Israeli forces and a guarantee for ending the war.
The proposed peace plan includes releasing all 48 of the remaining hostages in exchange for the release of prisoners and Gazans detained after October 7th. The implementation of a “Board of Peace” will oversee the temporary transitional governance of the apolitical Palestinian committee. The board will be headed by Donald Trump, as well as other members, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Israeli officials will eventually withdraw from the area but continue to maintain a buffer zone around the strip.
Trump’s response to Hamas’s acceptance has been to tell Israel to “immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, and that Hamas was ready for a lasting peace.” Whether all sides will hold up their end of the deal is unknown.
