Understanding Indian and Pakistani Reactions to the Israel-Hamas War

Prime Minister Modi of India declared his “unequivocal solidarity with Israel” before any official Western reaction came out, while many Indian news personalities have defined Israel’s military action since October 7th as “a war for all of us”. The Pakistani government, on the other hand, is likely trying to avoid a repeat of last year, when former Prime Minister Imran Khan jeopardized relationships in the West by visiting Moscow in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but this diplomatic approach may be tenuous if domestic pressure increases.

The State of Space Securitization in India

V.R. Chaudhari, the leader of India’s air forces, recently announced that the Indian Air Force is now effectively the “Indian Air and Space Forces”, a non-official designation that mirrors the American Air Force’s responsibility for space prior to the creation of the Space Force as a separate organization in 2019. Numerous Indian military officials and Prime Minister Modi himself have echoed Chaudhari’s emphasis on space as a security sector in the past year.

Canada Accuses India of Murder

Diplomatic relations between India and Canada have hit an all-time low. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused the Indian government of murdering a Canadian citizen on sovereign territory. Nijjar is considered a terrorist by the Indian government with the Indian National Investigation Agency accusing Nijjar of “trying to radicalize the Sikh community across the world in favor of the creation of ‘Khalistan,’” and “trying to incite Sikhs to vote for secession, agitate against the government of India and carry out violent activities.” So far, the Indian government has refused any involvement in the matter.

Conflict Over India’s History Fuels Name Change Speculation

BJP officials have argued that prioritizing Bharat over India falls into this de-Anglicization campaign, with one member of parliament arguing that “‘India’ was a name given by the colonial Raj and is thus a symbol of slavery.” However, critics have argued that the renaming push is part of a BJP campaign to redefine India’s history as belonging only to Hindus, erasing Anglican and especially Mughal influences on Indian history.
