Tensions on Finland-Russia Border
Finland is seeing an increasing number of migrants cross its border from Russia, increasing tensions between the two countries. As harsh winter conditions approach, it is unclear how either side will respond to the growing crisis.
The British-Rwandan Deal
The British Supreme Court has ruled against a deal that the British and Rwandan governments tried to make which would relocate asylum seekers from the UK to Rwanda. Despite this, some government officials are considering other means of pushing the deal forward.
Irish Technology for Mitigating Climate Change
Silicate, an Irish technology startup, has had success in its new practice to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In a second round of trials, the company plans on spreading 500 tons of concrete over 5 hectares of land in Illinois. Silicate estimates that just this test alone could result in locking away 100 tons of carbon dioxide where it would hopefully remain sequestered for thousands of years.
The New ‘Marshall Plan’
With the war in Ukraine still raging, Europe is beginning to look towards the future and what Ukraine will look like in the aftermath. Germany wants to play an active role in the newly proposed 'Marshall Plan' considering their historical background with such intensive post-war reconstruction. Leaders from major financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund, the European Investment Bank, and more were also invited to participate in the discussions.
Tightened Migration Laws in the European Union
The escalating situation between Israel and Gaza has caused several European countries to reevaluate their migration policies. Recent attacks in France and Belgium by suspected Islamic radicals haven't helped.
Far-Right Groups Gain Popularity in Germany
Germany has seen a recent surge in activity of far-right political groups. These groups often claim to be religious organizations but espouse racist and antisemitic views reminiscent of the views of the Nazi party. Publicly promoting these ideologies is illegal in Germany. Authorities are weary of the traction these groups are gaining, as a plot was recently discovered involving plans to overthrow the government by another far-right group.
Pope Francis Advocates for Migrant Rights
Pope Francis recently made an unofficial visit to France to meet with religious figures and activists from around the Mediterranean to discuss the flow of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea. He is working to fight against policies implemented by European countries meant to discourage migrants from making the dangerous crossing.
Record High Eurozone Interest Rates
On September 14th, the European Central Bank (ECB) raised Eurozone interest rates to a record high of 4% from 3.75%. This is the tenth consecutive increase in interest rates that the ECB has implemented with the goal of lowering inflation rates. The hope is that higher interest rates will cause people to buy less, which in turn will drive down the prices for individual items.
Spain’s Women’s Soccer Team Goes on Strike
Along with instances of sexual harassment, the women’s team has also consistently received less pay and worse working conditions than the men’s soccer players. Other goals focus on issues such as better standards for maternity leave and increased access to sports wellness resources that their male counterparts have. The season will not continue until the federation and the players union come to adequate agreements on these issues.
