Karoline Leavitt, White House spokesperson, has announced 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and 10% tariffs on China, which are to take effect on February 1st. These tariffs are in response to the movement of fentanyl and undocumented persons across the U.S. border. The White House contends that these countries are sources of fentanyl, which it claims has killed millions of Americans. Trump stated in a social media post on TruthSocial, that tariffs were part of his goal to control the US’s “ridiculous open borders”.
Mexico, Canada, and China are the top three trade partners of the US. These countries make up 40 percent of US Trade and economists say that these tariffs would spark price increases for fruit, lumber, aluminum, beer, motor vehicles, etc. Canada and Mexico have responded and are ready to act on Trumps tariff decisions. Trumps tariffs and Canada and Mexico’s retaliation is estimated to disrupt $1.6 trillion and bring an end to the 30-year free trade system.
